Curious at heart

Locus is more than just product development. We are a cross-functional team with a shared love for breaking boundaries. We live and breathe creativity, innovation, research-driven work and of course, great food.

Our journey so far.

Our story starts in 2002, when our founder Timothy Allan decided it was time to take the product development world into his own hands. He took his unique research-driven approach, gathered a few willing souls, pumped in some determination to succeed, and behold, Locus Research was born.

History recap? some highlights?
From agritech to the beauty industry to food technology and the marine industry, we collaborated with them all. We picked up skills and insights, developed frameworks and tools, and even documented our findings in resources for you to use.
We accumulated awards, invested in companies/start-ups, broadened our horizon and redefined what product development means to us. (do we need to elaborate on this? Like much more than the physical outcome – many different aspects that make or break a product.)

Today our name might be shorter – our philosophical outlook remains. We still use research as our primary tool to get to the heart of an idea and product. We look into broad domains, dig deep, generate insights, iterate and innovate at the intersection of Design, Sustainability, and Business. All to deliver products that do good.

What we stand for

Nurturing our creative culture is essential to our success — but that’s not all that drives us. We continually strive to learn, explore, and surround ourselves with other inspirational individuals on our path of discovery and creation.

We have promised each other

To be independent. To be creative. To continually learn. To work with conscience. To create friendship. To be sustainable and espouse environmental values. To always maintain integrity. To think of the customer and work with empathy. To be resilient. To be original.

Locus – its meaning

“a particular position or place where something occurs or is situated.”
To us, it represents a centre of great intensity that creatively and systematically investigates and develops original new insights and ideas.

Our logo – a nudge to our pillars

Where our name Locus represents the centre of creatively and systematically generating insights and ideas. Our logo embodies the three main drivers that we combine to ensure excellent product development.

Each of them representing different aspects and areas of interest, but combined working as the multiplier to success.

Design

User insights, Brand, Technology, Engineering, CMF, manufacturing, etc.

Sustainability

Life cycle thinking, brand, ethics, materials, systems, logistics, sourcing, manufacturing, etc

Business

Strategy, Model, Intellectual Property, marketing, sales, finance, governance, etc.

Locus Pillars

The do good stuff

In today’s world, it is simply not good enough to make desirable products without considering its environmental impact. As designers and makers, we must take responsibility and work systematically and transparently. A challenge that starts with Life cycle thinking and identifying the real game changers within the many layers of value chains, networks and stakeholders. It is about being accountable for what you put into the world and using that power to do good.

Our tagline “helping you create products that do good” literally reflects that notion, but also extends its meaning into actions that benefit our society and your business. Doing good is merely right for your business too. Harbouring a culture that inspires more sustainable practices and creating products and brands that people are proud of for many years to come.

It is the stuff we have always cared for, and this is reflected in among others our involvement in the creation of LCANZ (Life Cycle Assessment New Zealand) as well as creating the Sustainable Design Resource for the Design Institute of New Zealand (DINZ). We also offer Life Cycle Thinking Workshops with our longtime partner thinkstep to help your business get to grips with the power of sustainability and create better products.

Meet the team

We’re a small family of equal parts madness and skill; an assorted mix of world views and disciplines that come together to create a well-oiled machine. Seriously passionate, mildly obsessed, and always deeply dedicated to our projects. We do everything we can to push a product from good to great, from ordinary to extraordinary and beautiful.

Our team has retained an overriding focus on remaining vertically integrated, with staff skilled in multiple domains. More than a generic statement, our work embodies this approach structurally from research through to market execution.

Discover what our wide array of skills and expertise can do for you. We are a pretty friendly bunch, so get in touch if you have any questions.

Locus Extended Family

Over the years we’ve had some incredible team members and interns come and go. They’ve all left their mark on Locus History, and we still consider them our Locus family. So head here to learn more about our alumni.

Celebrating Success

Kiwi’s aren’t the best at patting themselves on their back, but every now and again you need to step back and raise a glass to all the great things you’ve accomplished. So, in a moment of Locus self-indulgence, a digital glass is being raised.

We have many great memories to share, but here a few to mention:

  • Awards: a wall full of DINZ Best Awards, one Gold Pin and many others we feel honoured by.
  • 18 years: of successful product development, and still loving every hardworking minute of it. It couldn’t get any better than that.
  • The publication of our first book in 2012 — A Measure of Success: Celebrating 10 Years of Successful Product Development.
  • Locus goes global. We have seen many corners of the world, presenting working and sharing our knowledge. Tell us where you are in the world, and we might stop by for a visit.
  • Always on the move. We’ve already occupied eight different studios, each one better than the last – with more ambitious plans on the horizon.
  • Don’t forget the food. We have shared many lunches and meals over the years — after all, those that eat together stay together.
